Social landlord Cynon Taf Community Housing Group (CTCHG) has completed its new Rhondda affordable housing scheme in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.  The scheme has utilised Social Housing Grant funding which will provide 12 much-needed homes in Penygraig.

Clos Graig Wen sits on the site of the former Penygraig Infant School, with the new scheme having two adapted properties including a bungalow, and 10 flats: eight one-bedroom and two two-bedrooms. The site was developed by Morganstown-based construction company ASD Build and the properties include solar panels and air source heat pumps to deliver energy efficient homes with reduced utility costs.

CTCHG welcomed Councillors Lisa Ellis and Gareth Hughes, who cover the Penygraig and Tonypandy wards respectively, to Clos Graig Wen to show them the completed homes and to highlight the partnership working with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, as well as the services that are available to the tenants through the organisation.

Auriol Miller, chief executive for Cynon Taf Community Housing Group said, “It’s fantastic to see Clos Graig Wen come to completion and offer energy efficient, affordable homes that not only provide our tenants with somewhere safe and warm to live, but also aim to reduce the impact of fuel poverty in our local communities.

“We were delighted to welcome Councillors Ellis and Hughes to the scheme so that they could see the finished homes, and tenants moving in. Our continued partnership with the Council is essential to ensuring that, as a landlord, we can provide homes in the areas that they are most needed.”

This scheme sees CTCHG with almost 2,000 properties across the Cynon and Taf valleys, ensuring that local people have access to affordable, quality homes where they can thrive.

Gareth Hughes, ward councillor for Tonypandy commented, “It was great to be shown around the much-needed new homes that have been developed on the former Penygraig Infant School site. The quality and finish of the homes is exceptional and it’s good to know that the future residents will benefit from the energy produced by the solar panels. I wish all residents a very happy future.”

Lisa Ellis, ward councillor for Penygraig added, “I believe the new development is a fantastic addition to our community. The homes are spacious and will provide local people with the chance to stay in the area, as well as safe space to thrive. A massive thank you to Cynon Taf Community Housing Group and ASD Build.”

Councillor Mark Norris, Cabinet Member for Prosperity and Development at Rhondda Cynon Taf Council said, “The new homes delivered by Cynon Taf Community Housing Group will be a much-welcomed addition to the local area. There is a rising demand for one-bedroom and adapted properties, which these will help to meet.

“The fact that these properties are energy efficient will provide longer term benefits for those living in them of reduced energy bills, as well as helping to reduce carbon emissions.

“Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is committed to working with partners like Cynon Taf Community Housing Group to ensure our residents have access to quality homes in locations that allow people to access work and leisure opportunities.”

Cynon Taf Community Housing Group has two further sites currently under development, including one at the site of the former Porth Primary School. This development, which is another ASD Build partnership, will see 15 homes built: six two-bedroom houses and nine one-bedroom flats, which will be completed in Summer 2025.

The other development is at a former engineering site in Hirwaun, with 21 homes being developed by Pendragon Design and Build, for completion at the end of 2025.
